Forget what your back players tell you: The only way to be a bona fide Paintball Demigod is to do run-thrus. Lots of run-thrus. And here's how.
It's Sunday afternoon, the event is over and it's time to take that long trip back home to the real world. You all know the feeling; reminiscing on the great moves your boys pulled off, remembering the teams you walked all over, mulling over those grind-out games that just seemrd to slip through your grasp. One thing that always seem to stick in my head, whether we win or lose, are those train-wreck bunker runs that brake a game open or even destroy the odd team. I think all ballers dream about pulling off moves like this, yet only a select few seem to be able to do it consistently with ease. I don't think there is a greater individual moment in a game of Paintball than running straight at an un-suspecting bad guy, coming round his bunker and putting a few sweet balls into his back. I am not claiming to be the run-through king, but by breaking it all down, hopefully we can work out how to make it a hell of a lot easier to roll through bad guys in style.
In my eyes, there are three main types of run-through - all of which involve you getting up out of your bunker, running down the field and bringing the pain. Recognising when you have the opportunity to pull one of these moves is a skill that you can develop over time, or you can speed up the process by working your bunker, trying to pull these crazy moves in game situations and learning from your mistakes.
This will occur when a bad guy has made a key spot on the field, usually a 5o bunker, and needs to be taken out before they cause too much damage. It also happens a lot if there is one guy holding up your whole team, and to get the game rolling again he needs to be taken down. A lot of the time these moves will be for the good of the team and you will usually be gunned down in the process. As long as you take the guy with you then it is all good, but to be a true pimp you need to either shoot the guy out and spin back round into safety, or carry on and dive into another safe bunker. Both are very hard to pull off, but with a little practise and pre-planning you can get the odds working in your favour.
This usually occurs when there are only a few guys left, but they are locked up well and holding their lanes. It is a calculated move to take out the remaining bad guys one by one, in quick succession. Using all the blind spots and lanes you can find will definitely help, along with some killer running and gunning skills. The main thing you will need to pull off a move like this is the awareness to work out what they are doing, and your game smarts to work out how to break them down. This sort of thing is almost impossible to teach; the best way of working out what you can get away with is trying it in game situations. Sure, you will get chewed up trying moves, everyone does, but no one will be laughing when you walk away with mad props come game day.
