A question about hired guns

This is obviously directed to the teams doing the hiring but I'm curious as to the process. Do you look for a particular need or will any American gun do on the assumption they's just that much better?
The reason I ask is the recent spate of individual American players both on these boards and elsewhere looking for some Euro games. And I wonder how much some of the Euros know about some of these players beyond what team they play for in the U.S.

Now there's an idea.

Pick a B-level American Pro player.

Offer his services for a Millenium event.

Get scrubs from the local field to fly over and pretend to be that player and pocket the fee. By the time anyone wises up, it'll be too late!

Paul ,

This is not me giving an excuse to why my team had an american , given the chance i would have had an all british squad , but when circumstances arise...... i will explain

After a very poor result in Toulouse , i found my self to be a player banned for throwing his gun like a 2 yr tantrum ,2 of my younger players had to revise for the exams which are though june and july , this left me with 5 players ........then one of my other core players decided to get glandular fever for 3 weeks .leaving me with 4 core players and 1 that MIGHT be fit enough to play 1 week b4 germany ......now given this problem , i had Ryan Podesta from the Bushwackers, come on the forums asking for a game in Germany , he said he had paid for his plane ticket and just needed i bed .....so what was my decision making process .......simple, just speak to people that i knew in the states and confirm that he was a solid player ,i was not interested in a superstar player ,just someone who would be solid point after point .......now to real question why get an american in when we have a player base in england .

This is the one that people just wont like , but its the cold hard truth .

We dont have enough good players in the UK

Any player worth his salt is either playing CPL or SPL with there relevant team, why would some really good player from D1 team come and jump on my roster for 1 event and then be locked into the team for a yr,for example , i have a few young kids at the local field that are not far off being very good SPL players , but if they play for me there locked for the season , so wont be able to play with there current team at CC or Paris.

While I fullly accept the extraordinary circumstances Chris - I cannot accept the quoted part as a valid excuse for importing players from the US.

First of all - qualify "good enough"?..... I mean, I may just as well say "we don't have enough players in Denmark and Sweden that are good enough for winning the series and getting promoted to the CPL" - and then import 5 Philly players to do the job for us.

ANY team out there that imports Pros from the US to play for them, do it because they lack confidence in the roster they can field.... and that is exactly the problem as I see it.

As said, I accept that you had special circumstances for Maxs, and very little time to solve a problem in - but the fact remains that once you imported a US Pro, you won the event.... and to many, that will be seen as taking the easy road.

I will ofcourse look forward to seeing whether they guy is on your roster for Campaign or not - and if he is not, I applaud you..... but for many teams the decision has not been one of solving a temporary and urgent problem, but rather to secure a CPL spot through hiring top Pro players to do the job for them.

It is completely within the rules - and as such not "wrong" in terms of the rules.... but I certainly think it is wrong morally - and that it goes against the grain of fair competition.

I don't think there's very many people who have seen Disruption play who would make the link between a US Semi (that is right isn't it?) pro and them winning the SPL. I think Disruption would have done just as well, probably better if they'd had one of their own squad players in Germany.

Just my 2 cents.

Not to offend anyone on disruption or any one else.

But that bushwackers guy ripped. He played fenomenal every point i saw him play, so i highly doubt that the team would have done as good without him.
Not taking any credit from the rest of the team, as they all played well.

This is just my personal opinion, subjective or not.

Sorry don't agree, he did a job but was by no means the best player out there for disruption.

Its all about Chris Edwards, isnt it tricky? ;)

I didnt get a chance to see them in Germany, but watching them play in toulouse (without any foreign guests) - as well as simply knowing the players on the roster - it was clear that they had an incredible amount of talent on the team.
