could just pack into a family room with team-mates, works out at like £10 per eve that way... so not so bad

That's what Gulo used to do pack six into a standard room - we then spent the whole night wondering who was about to be jumped next. Hey it might not be legit and of course I can't condone or recommend it but hey it does make it more cost effective. Just be careful at breakfast!
No one actually asks you if you stayed in the hotel, they just assume.

I got asked in toulouse. Couldn't sleep one of the nights, and rather than listen to those other two *******s snoring their heads off, I went for a walk to clear my head.
This would have been about 2 in the morning. Got back to the hotel, sat in reception for a while texting the missus, only for the receptionist to give me funny looks and ask not so nicely if i had a room.
Of course upon production of the room key all was fine. And i still couldn't sleep.
