Aight, kids. We're close to getting a little too touchy on a topic totally unrelated to Paintball. So knock it off. Thank you for your cooperation.

Let's talk about the high desert heat of San Bernadino or perhaps the carpet remnants upcoming in San Diego instead.
Or y'all could talk about the new season ranking in the NXL and the tightening race for 2nd thru 5th since this is an NXL thread.

Yes, sorry about that - nearly got carried away in a government induced wave of patriotic ferver...

I personally would like to hear your own report on SB Loco. So far I have heard the official edited word, and the totally anti PSP opinions, neither of which were particularly enlightening. So, reffing? Fields? standard of play? Turn-out? parking? Spectators? general behavior or the premadonna's? Value? Lets hear it.

I personally would like to hear your own report on SB Loco. So far I have heard the official edited word, and the totally anti PSP opinions, neither of which were particularly enlightening. There's an official word? Hey, that's a step in the right direction.:p
In order. Reffing: NXL is fine. Even with some staff turnover the core remains and I thought overall SB was a better, more consistent effort than Chicago. We'll see how it goes but Tony and Bob are making a concerted effort to attain and maintain a high standard. PSP is a mixed bag still but one hopes it will improve. The program in effect and the volume of ref training is building a larger base of available refs but as a group they still lack seasoning and experience. The field layout also added some complication at this event but in general I'd say it was adequate and if the league can maintain (there's that word again) a core of officials we'll probably start seeing a positive result in the not to distant future. (They need more drilling in the rules however and the current rulebook doesn't enumerate all the rules in use. Sound familiar? That needs fixing as well.)

Fields were fabulous. Lovely playing surface. Rather what I expected at last year's NE Open when they talked about soccer fields.;) Bunker placement wasn't always too precise away from the NXL field however and this layout perhaps required gridding out all the fields. Don't know if that's routinely done or not but then I'm rather anal about details of that sort so maybe it's only me.)

Standard of play. All the best teams in the majority of the divisions were there as they are competing for season titles too so no harm done really. The divisions were otherwise a little thin and the typical filler teams from the area (broadly) were largely absent but I'd guess that was mostly the result of the late site confirmation. D1 Xball is the only bracket suffering and they have been all year as there simply aren't teams competing. The old routine of the better teams looking to move up didn't happen this past off season in the usual numbers so the competition has suffered somewhat tho I suspect most of the leading teams would be the leading teams regardless of the size of the division overall. Even so it's more interesting when more teams are in the mix. It might also have something to do with the economics of playing as D1 is Xball rather than something more Xball Lite-ish. There certainly isn't a dearth of D2 or D3 teams.

Turn-out. The whole late confirmation bugaboo again. Still, incluidng 5-man 100+ total teams.

Parking. Paying--again--but on the plus side I'm getting used to it. A larger turn-out and it would have probably posed some problems. At the scale of the event it was fine and as the parking more or less ringed the venue nowhere was a long walk from anywhere else. (And no, we were in SB, not Nowhere, but Nowhere was just down the road a ways.)

Venue. Threw this in as a value added. By venue I mean the general layout, etc. which was solid. Similar in conception to Texas which I liked with only differences being a better layout for the vendors in SB but with no room to put the paint trailers between the fields so we had to walk to one end. (Which wasn't a big deal, particularly as we borrowed the Draxxus 6-wheeler. Thanks, guys.)

Spectators. Not as many in the stands on a consistent basis as in Chicago or Vegas but not as many teams either nor the same accessibility. Of course if the PSP were to calculate numbers based on parking passes issued the number might look fairly impressive.

Primadonnas. Is that a team? I thought I knew most everyone but I guess not.;) Far as I saw everyone was on their best behavior and I heard no stories of incidents during the event so pretty boring really. There was some yapping going on amongst the Pros during matches but that's pretty normal and the majority was harmless.

Value. This one is always tricky in that different folks have different priorities and/or agendas. I go to compete and while some of the trappings are nice I'm happier if the basics are done right first. On that score I have no complaints about the event particulars. Was it hot and out of the way? Yes. So it wasn't an imposing location nor did it add to the ambience of the event--which I think matters--but I'd rather play on quality level grass fields than in parking lots even though the stadiums are cool. Seems for now there are always trade-offs.
