Jesus Tapdancing Christ. You guys are worried that a pepper spray ball is going to give paintball a bad name when a riot officer uses them? Or that they are unsafe because they'll take out an eye?

I'm sorry--if you're rioting in my neighborhood, the police can shoot whatever the hell they want at you to get you to stop. Some schmuck who's willing to bash in a store window and steal a TV losing an eye doesn't seem like much of an issue when it helps prevent or stop looting, fires, and murders.

Besides anyone that loses an eye will just be awarded a $30 billion settlement from our moron judicial system.

First it was "People will equate us with war and think we are violent." Not it's "People will equate us with the authorities and think we're too violent." Gimme a break.

Er? fine but a lot of us aren't in the US. The most our police can do at the moment is say stop or I'll shout stop again. And I think even your police would feel more able to open fire if they were using "non-lethal" response, as shooting someone has a massive effect on anyones life. however, this is going to lead to minor criminals losing an eye or innocent bystanders being hit, in situations where real firearms wouldn't be fired at all

I'm not worried about the health of protesters, despite having friends of mine hurt pretty badly by overly aggressive police at a few RTS events here in Chicago. Im more worried about people looking on TV and seeing cops shooting the hell out of protesters with tippmans and watching their bodies writhe under the hail of pepperballs, then wondering why their son wants one of those for christmas.

Ok,ok..... wait a minute. I don't know what level of force the officers in the UK are allowed to use according to the provocation. Here in the states beanbags are used for less than leathal actions, most of the time, we haven't quite found the best mouse trap. OC, CS powder or liquid sometimes just makes people more violent, but a broken sturnum really takes the fight out of you. As for officers in the UK who "only" have an ASP batton, ha, I Have had my clavical broken in training at half speed by one of those little *******s.

This is not strictly true, the Met are not all armed, but after a rather embarrasing "getting lost on a sponsorred run" incident in Harlesdon (London) a few years back, the police drove me back to the local police station; as I got in the driver said "Just push the body armour aside" it was a kevlar bullet prof vest. Then when I got to the station, they were ALL armed. I don't mean that there was an ARU there, I mean that all of the officers in the station were armed.

It is now standard for one of the cars on a watch's patrol to be the ARU so the response time really isn't bad.

Anyways, guns scare the **** out of me, I'd rather that "Less lethal" alternatives were used.

Thats the Met...

... with the possible exception of maybe Greater Manchester the Met are probably the odd one out here. I know for sure that in Hampshire I can walk into my Dads Police Station get my bike and walk straight back out again without even speaking to anyone. The only place I have ever seen a Policeman holding a gun is at the Ferry Port (on the 10th September 2002) and on TV. British Police just don't carry them around that much.
Having one of the cars on the patrol being an ARU does sound like a good idea though!
Now seeing the whole Police force equipped with Tippmans would be funny! They'd never catch anyone.... they'd be to busy painting the nearest tree
I think that the use of 'less-lethal' alternatives is a good idea as far as it goes... you couls use them when dealing with a crowd, but what are you going to do when someone pulls out an Uzi and starts spraying the place? I'd rather be behind an MP-5 than a Tippman!!
