I'd say to make sure the decision about where you go to uni is in no way whatsoever affected by the presence of a paintball club or lack thereof.

If the uni you end up going to has a good club then great, if it doesnt, make it good. If it doesn't have one at all, found one if you really want to. But think about the other 99% of completely non-pb related time that you'll be spending there and the (potentially) fair amount of time you may even stumble accross a book or into a lecture and let other factors have a larger impact on your decision. Female to male ratio for example, alway important. But don't choose your uni because they won the 'Inter Uni Championship' or anything like that. (No offence to whoever did win it, I've not got the foggiest).

I am absolutely stunned that it was only in the 12th post that someone pointed out the obvious...!

of course I wont base my decision entirely on whether there is paintballing at the uni, but it is a factor in deciding.
It would be nice to have the facilities to train one a week or so without having to travel huge distances. Im not really bothered on the placement of the uni team in the inter uni competitions but if its possible to keep training and improving then once iv finished uni I should be in good stead to play more competitively and at a higher level.

basically i just want to keep improving and i know in the sport if you want to go far you need to be young and fit so I dont want to waste 3 years not improving.

Uni paintball in the UK will not contribute to the pool of 'high caliber paintball players' for quite a while I feel.
TBH nobody cares about uni paintball in the slightest apart from the students themselves, and there's very few paintballing students to begin with, let alone enough for there to be 5 or 7 all at one uni with enough initiative, drive, determination and patience to become a top paintball team.

If you really want to play at a higher level you'd be better off training with a team outside of uni where there would be more like minded ballers who really want to improve, and preferably in an environment with a decent coach and people who know what they're on about in regard to training.

It all depends what you want really. If you just want to piss about, train a bit, have some fun, nothing serious, keep cobwebs off then uni paintball all the way. If you want to continue to progress and move forward in the tourney scene (in UK, Europe, eventually the States, whatever) then your probably better off making the effort to go train with a descent team external to uni.
Either way, I hope this is a small factor in your decision.

What you hoping to study?

as a member of pompey uni and the paintball team (tho i play for relentless) i somewhat agree and disagree with comments here.

as far as paintball at portsmouth uni is concerned (and i'm fairly new to sup'air) i have never met a more determined team whose sole practice is to improve and gain more recognition in the paintball scene that not only promotes portsmouth uni as having a successful team through good training habits, but allows players to individually improve and allow them to make a go of any future plans they have with the game.

AJermstad, i cant help but feel *edit*some*edit* your comments are completely detrimental to uni paintball improving and getting more on the scene. Pompey uni are always looking to get outside help (many thanks to the lessons Sanchez/H-S#1 and #2 have taught us) and i have no doubt at all that the piss ups, training and bit of fun pompey uni have as a team/society are what makes the team so collective. i will argue to the end that each individual player has more team spirit and willingness to improve than many teams put together.

the problem with uni paintball is the cost and that comes down to loans and funding and i dont know all the details but at the beginning of the year i believe the loan we had was about £300, now tell me what you expect us to do with that???

anyways, back on track - sumo89, i've dropped u a pm with the link to the pompey uni paintball teams forum. be good if you drop by, we're a great bunch of people who just roll off each other with no problems and always have a laugh (major piss-up last night at the athletics ball as our vice-pres got an award for commitment) but still hold the game as the central reason we all joined and pay the money we do to enjoy a game we love!

I agree with jerm in most respects, don't pick a uni for its paintball club.

Uni paintball has come forward leaps and bounds in the last few years thanks to the efforts of a few people, good ole steve hancock ;) , but uni is a bloody expensive way to find a new team, and I've found paintball can seriously get in the way of studies

again, im not gonna choose a uni just for its paintballing, or lack of. But iv got to take every factor into account and paintballing a important to me.
Iv already got a team and ill probably carry on for them unless i move somewhere too far away.
I should get almost all my expenses paid for by grants so it wont be more of an expense than it already is.
